Avalon, New Jersey, is a hidden gem along the Jersey Shore, offering miles of pristine beaches, a small charming boardwalk, and breathtaking sunsets. Whether you’re planning a family portrait, a couples session, or senior photos, a well-planned beach photography session in Avalon can capture memories that last a lifetime.
1. Choose the Best Time for Photos
Timing is everything when it comes to beach photography. We shoot in the evening for the softest, most flattering light. Too early and everyone is either squinting or sweating - neither of which are great for portraits. It’s super important to take your photographer’s advice when it comes to timing. It makes such a huge difference in the final images.
2. Pick the Best Avalon Locations
Each year we scout out the best locations in Avalon for beach portraits. Those locations may stay the same each year or may change based on the changing landscape of the beach. Fall and winter storms can play havoc on the beach so each spring we check the status of the beach and choose our favorite spots. Some years we shoot at the 30th Street Pier or the rock jetty on 8th Street. Other times we choose the streets with the most incredible dunes in Avalon. One of the most important things we take into consideration is what the light is doing at a particular location. That can change as the season changes. For instance, the sun sets much further south at the end of August than in the beginning of June.
3. Coordinate Outfits and Props
Simple, coordinated outfits work best for beach photography. Some colors that go well and complement Avalon’s natural beach environment are khaki, blue, green and of course, white. When choosing colors look for earthy-type colors or colors you will see in nature at the beach. For instance, if choosing green stay away from super bright greens. Instead look for a green that mimics colors you’ll see in the dunes. For families, consider matching tones without being too uniform. Couples and senior sessions can incorporate personal touches like blankets, hats, or props that reflect your style. Also, stay away from to many different and distracting patterns. Some patterns are ok and can add a little personality to the pictures but having everyone wear a patterned shirt or outfit might be a little much. If you have questions about colors or styles ask your photographer for suggestions.
4. Plan for Comfort and Logistics
Bring water, a towel, and for families with children bring snacks and any toy that may be able to either get there attention or keep them calm. Also, consider weather conditions when choosing your outfits. Some days can be very hot in Avalon and others can be quite chilly - especially with evening wind. Check the hourly weather report a day or two in advance so you can plan accordingly.
5. Work With a Local Expert
Partnering with a photographer who knows Avalon’s beaches makes a huge difference. A local expert can help you with all of the above and more. Check out our Avalon town page to see examples of sessions captured right here on Avalon’s beautiful beaches.
