BEFORE Your Beach Shoot
“Preparation is the Key”

  • Preparing Children for a Beach Shoot
  • General Preparation Tips
  • What to Wear

We want your beach portrait to be a pleasant experience for you and everyone in your group. If children are prepared ahead of time they know what to expect and usually behave better.

We have compiled a list of tips that we received from parents of past beach shoots on how they successfully prepared their kids for their beach portrait.

  1. Talk to your kids (no matter what their ages). If kids know what to expect ahead of time, they can mentally prepare for what is to come and are more patient during your beach portrait session. Be sure to let children know:
    • You are going to have some pictures taken on the beach.
    • Many pictures will be taken.
    • They will need to listen to you.
    • They will need to take directions from a stranger (the photographer).
    • Anything else you feel will prepare your children.

  2. Offering rewards… It's been our experience that children not only behave better but get excited about the prospect of receiving a reward after the photo shoot. Ice Cream seems to be the reward of choice for more families. What would work best with your kids? A trip to the arcade, an extra hour of TV. You know your children best and what will work for them.

  3. The Final 4 - Make sure your kids:
    • Are well fed.
    • Are well rested.
    • Have an empty bladder (No bathroom on the beach)
    • Have a snack and/or small beverage handy

Please follow these tips for the most successful portrait session.

  1. Don't forget the BUG SPRAY. Bugs can be bad at times-especially by the dunes.

  2. Bring a small towel to brush sand off.

  3. AVOID LOTION / MOISTURIZER on your legs and arms - it makes sand very difficult to brush off.

  4. We can't control the WIND on the beach so come prepared - bring a hairbrush, and Ladies, be prepared to put your hair up if needed.

  5. Attention eyeglass wearers: please be aware that reflections on glasses can be very harsh. If possible, have your optometrist temporarily remove your lenses OR borrow a set of frames without lenses. Eyeglass glare can usually be removed digitally for a fee.

Please follow these “wardrobe tips” for the most successful portrait session.

  1. We highly recommend coordinating outfits for a unified look

  2. Most colors will work as long as you stick with solid colors – avoid bright fluorescent colors; blues and earth tones work well

  3. Avoid large and distracting prints

  4. Anyone with large upper arms may want to avoid sleeveless tops

  5. If weight is a concern, avoid tight clothing

  6. Do not wear white bottoms unless wearing all white

  7. Large groups with multiple families can coordinate with matching colors or . . . have everyone wear the same color bottoms and each individual family unit wear a different color top

  8. Dress comfortably – you will be asked to sit and/or kneel in the sand
